Tribute from Rum Samasuwo

I first met Jonny around about 20 years ago at school. I remember my first encounter with him clear as day.

I was having my singing lesson in the music room opposite to his and my friend had just finished her clarinet lesson and was talking to Jonny, she called me over and introduced me to him and we had been friends ever since.

I never actually learned to play any woodwind instruments with him, but we forged a musical friendship over our love of Jazz and Soul. Jonny became my Pianist, Saxophonist and music arranger on stuff when I needed him and vice versa. We were even lucky enough to record in the studio together.

I’ll never forget the laughs, the studio engineer wondered if we would even get the recording done we laughed so much. I will never forget Jonny’s crazy sense of humour, I couldn’t repeat the stuff he used to say to me as some might think it rude… but we both knew what he meant, his giggles & laughter will always ring on in my ears, it was so unique, so distinct.

Jonny was one of the best piano players and sax players I’ve ever met and had the honour to know personally. I am so thankful to have been friends with him all these years, he was a constant source of laughter despite his struggles that he would share with me, but he always had a kind word to say.

One of the last things he said to me was that I was one of his favourite singers and that he loved me. I still can’t believe that he is gone but I know that he is at peace, probably organising a band up there haha.

Mr Webb, Sir, Jonny, My Friend I will miss you forever… thank you for the memories, you truly were the best!!

Love you… na night xxx
